William Gay is a longtime supporter of domestic violence prevention. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ cornerback was fined $5,787 for wearing purple cleats last week in Kansas City to support domestic violence awareness. The cleats violated the leagues uniform policy. The color purple is inspired by domestic violence awareness month.
Gay will not appeal the fine but hopes that the money he was fined is used to help bring awareness to domestic violence.
Gay, whose mother was shot and killed by his stepfather when Gay was 7, has publicly supported the cause for years and was featured in a recent public service announcement shown in prime time.
